Fairhaven is one of three pioneer settlements on Bellingham Bay that became interconnected to become the City of Bellingham in 1904. Fairhaven's approximate 600 residents live in single-family homes, apartment complexes, and condominium complexes. Fairhaven residents can walk to most services, including a grocery stores, bookstore, shops, Fairhaven Village Green, and the Fairhaven Public Library.

The commercial center of Fairhaven is the Fairhaven National Register Historic District, which is home to 17 beautiful historic buildings. Many infill buildings that have been designed to coincide with local history, have been built in the last few years

The Alaska Marine Ferry docks  twice a week in Fairhaven at the Transportation Center, this location also houses the Amtrak Station and Greyhound Bus depot.

Padden Creek meanders through the neighborhood which provides an attractive greenbelt. Marine Park, which is a 2-acre park on Fairhaven's waterfront, emphasizes the neighborhood's marine orientation and history. Fairhaven Village Green,  the core of Fairhaven, is the central hub of activity in the commercial core with concerts, movies, bocce ball, farmer's market. The South Bay Trail connects Fairhaven with Bellingham's City Center, Fairhaven Park, and Chuckanut Mountains.
