Sunnyland is located west of I-5 and north of Whatcom Creek. Sunnyland Neighborhood is as diverse as any of the Bellingham neighborhoods. Industrial uses, some located in older homes, dominate the southern third of the neighborhood. Multifamily and single family areas surround a neighborhood commercial area at the Alabama Street and James Street intersection. Sunnyland Neighborhood, home to approximately 2,200 Bellingham residents, includes open space and playing fields at the reconstructed Bellingham High School, Sunnyland Park, Sunnyland Elementary School and Memorial Park.

The northern portion of the neighborhood has low density residential uses, the western portion is higher density residential uses. Residential character of the neighborhood is one of single family two-story older homes, with many families having lived in the area for many years. Homes in the Sunnyland Neighborhood have continued to be well maintained.
